Wedding Travel Guide

Ralph & Ana — Brisbane, Australia

Wedding date: Saturday, 9 January 2027 Ceremony: St Mary's Anglican Church, Kangaroo Point, Brisbane Reception: Pilloni, West End, Brisbane Document version: v1.1 — May 2026

How to use this guide

This document is a companion to the wedding website. It pulls together everything Brazilian guests need to plan the trip — flights, visas, accommodation, transport, things to do, suggested itineraries, and links to book each part directly.

Important: Prices, schedules and room availability change frequently. Every link in this guide leads to a search or booking page where you can confirm current details before paying. For January 2027 travel, book early — this is peak Australian summer and overlaps with Queensland school holidays.

A Brazilian Portuguese version of this guide is available at wedding-travel-guide.pt.html (toggle in the top-right).

Quick start — your trip in 5 minutes

  1. Check your visa. Brazilian passport holders need an eVisitor (subclass 651) or ETA (subclass 601). Apply online, free or low-cost, at least 4–6 weeks before departure. → Australian visa finder
  2. Aim to arrive in Brisbane by Thursday 7 January 2027 at the latest — you'll want at least one full day to recover from jet lag before the wedding.
  3. Stay in Woolloongabba if you can — adjacent to the ceremony in Kangaroo Point, close to the reception in West End, well-priced, and well-connected to the rest of South East Queensland.
  4. Book flights and accommodation by mid-2026 to lock in the best prices for the peak summer window.
  5. Allow at least 2 weeks total — anything less and the long-haul flight isn't worth it. Three weeks lets you properly explore South East Queensland.

1. Visa & entry requirements

Brazilian passport holders cannot enter Australia without a visa or electronic travel authority. Two options apply for tourism:

Visa Cost How to apply When to apply
eVisitor (subclass 651) Free Online only — Australian government 4–6 weeks before travel
ETA (subclass 601) ~AUD 20 Australian ETA mobile app 4–6 weeks before travel

Both allow multiple visits of up to 3 months each within a 12-month period. Apply before booking non-refundable flights, as a small percentage of applications get referred to a longer review process.

Official links: - Australian visa finder (Home Affairs) - Australian Embassy in Brazil — visas and migration

Also worth noting: - US transit visa or ESTA required if connecting through Dallas, Houston, or Los Angeles. - Carry proof of return flight and accommodation at check-in. - Yellow fever certificate may be requested if you have travelled through high-risk countries within 6 days of arrival.

2. Flights — São Paulo (GRU) → Brisbane (BNE)

The basics

There are no direct flights between São Paulo and Brisbane. Every option requires at least one stop, most require two. Door-to-door travel time is 26–32 hours. Brisbane is 13 hours ahead of São Paulo during the wedding period (Australian Eastern Daylight Time).

The four sensible routings

Via the Middle East (Qatar Airways or Emirates) — most comfortable - GRU → Doha (DOH) → BNE — Qatar Airways operates a direct DOH–BNE leg. - GRU → Dubai (DXB) → BNE — Emirates also offers this combination. - ✅ Top-rated business and economy products, single connection, modern aircraft, generous baggage. - ⚠️ Usually the most expensive. Longer elapsed time due to the westward backtrack. - Flight time: ~28–30 hours.

Via Auckland or Santiago (LATAM + Qantas) — fewest miles flown - GRU → Santiago (SCL) → Sydney (SYD) or Auckland (AKL) → BNE. - LATAM operates direct SCL–SYD and SCL–AKL on Boeing 787s. Qantas connects to BNE. - ✅ Geographically the most direct, fewer hours in the air, easier on the body. - ⚠️ Award space books out 11–12 months ahead. Connection times can be tight. - Flight time: ~26–28 hours.

Via the United States (American or United) — often the cheapest - GRU → Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), or Los Angeles (LAX) → SYD or BNE. - ✅ Most weekly frequencies, often the lowest fares. - ⚠️ US transit visa or ESTA required. Longest total distance. - Flight time: ~30–32 hours.

Via Africa (South African Airways) — possible but rarely worth it. Skip unless on points.

3. Accommodation

The two wedding venues are about 3 km apart in inner-southside Brisbane. Kangaroo Point (church) and West End (reception) sit on either side of the South Bank cultural precinct — a short rideshare apart.

For most guests, Woolloongabba is the most strategic place to stay in Brisbane. The reasons stack up:

Hotels in Woolloongabba:

Hotel Style Approx. price (peak)
Oaks Brisbane Woolloongabba Suites 1- and 2-bed apartments, full kitchens, rooftop pool AUD 220–320/night
Swiss-Belhotel Woolloongabba 4-star, 110 rooms AUD 200–300/night
Quest Woolloongabba Apart-hotel, self-contained, family-friendly AUD 200–320/night
Hotel Diana Woolloongabba Quieter 4-star, free parking AUD 180–280/night
Hotel Chino Independent boutique 4-star, value-focused AUD 160–240/night
Trafalgar Lane Apartments by CLLIX 5-star apartments, outdoor pool AUD 250–400/night

Watch when booking: - The Gabba hosts Big Bash League cricket through Dec/Jan, and sometimes a Test match in early January. If a home game falls on or near 9 January 2027, Woolloongabba prices and traffic will spike. Check fixtures when published mid-2026, and book early either way. - Peak summer (first two weeks of January) overlaps with Queensland school holidays. Book by mid-2026.

Alternatives if Woolloongabba is full

All within 10 minutes of both venues by rideshare:

West End — bohemian, leafy, packed with cafés and the Saturday Davies Park Market. Fewer big hotels, lots of Airbnb-style apartments and converted Queenslander cottages. AUD 200–500/night. Main hotel: Capri by Fraser (4.5-star).

South Bank — riverside, restaurants, cultural precinct. 10-minute walk to both venues. Top picks: Emporium Hotel South Bank (5-star, AUD 450–750), Rydges South Bank (4-star, AUD 250–380), Mantra South Bank (apartments), Novotel Brisbane South Bank (4-star), The Fantauzzo (boutique 5-star).

Brisbane CBD — 5 minutes by rideshare to either venue. Full city amenities. Top picks: W Brisbane (5-star riverfront, AUD 500–900), The Calile Hotel (James Street precinct, AUD 450–750), Sofitel Brisbane Central, Ovolo Inchcolm (boutique heritage), Ibis Styles (budget, AUD 180–250).

Gold Coast — for pre/post-wedding beach time

About 80 km south of Brisbane. 1 hour by car or just over by train + tram. Not a sensible base for the wedding day itself — keep this for before or after.

Area Vibe Best for
Surfers Paradise High-rise, lively, touristy First-timers wanting everything close by
Broadbeach Refined, beachfront, casino, shopping All-rounder, families
Burleigh Heads Bohemian, headland park, café scene Locals' favourite, foodies
Coolangatta Quietest, southernmost, near airport Budget, gateway to Byron
Main Beach Low-rise, leafy, near Sea World Families with kids

Suggested hotels: - The Langham Gold Coast (Broadbeach) — newest beachfront luxury, AUD 600–1,200. - JW Marriott Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) — saltwater lagoon, AUD 450–750. - QT Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) — design-forward boutique, AUD 350–550. - Peppers Soul (Surfers Paradise) — high-rise apartments, family/group-friendly. - The Sheraton Grand Mirage (Main Beach) — classic resort with lagoon. - Burleigh Palms / Burleigh on the Beach — apartment-style, good value.

Approximate price ranges (peak season, Dec/Jan)

Tier Brisbane Gold Coast
Budget hostel/B&B AUD 80–150 AUD 100–180
Mid-range hotel/apartment AUD 180–350 AUD 250–450
4–5 star hotel AUD 350–600 AUD 450–800
Luxury / suites AUD 600+ AUD 800+

⚠️ January is officially the cheapest month for Brisbane hotels on average, but the first two weeks (school holidays) are the exception. Prices ease noticeably from around 22 January when Queensland schools restart.

Rental cars

For exploring beyond Brisbane, a rental car is the best option. Public transport thins out quickly outside the immediate metropolitan area.

Rideshare

Uber and DiDi are both widely available in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Lyft does not operate in Australia. Ola has wound down. Uber is the most reliable default.

5. Things to do in South East Queensland

8. Practical tips for Brazilian travellers

Weather and sun. Brisbane in January is hot (28–32°C), humid, and the UV is brutal. Always wear SPF 50+, a hat, and sunglasses. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Don't underestimate this.

Jet lag. 13 hours east is one of the hardest time-zone shifts. Arrive at least 3–4 days before the wedding. Drink water on the flight, sleep when you can, and get sunlight on day one.

Mosquitoes and stingers. Some mosquitoes in Brisbane. Marine stingers are rare in SEQ (the danger zone is further north) but bluebottles can wash up after northerly winds — annoying, not dangerous.

Currency and payments. Australia is largely cashless. Tap-to-pay with Visa/Mastercard works everywhere. Notify your Brazilian bank you'll be travelling. Wise / Revolut / Nomad cards are good for avoiding foreign-transaction fees.

Power outlets. Australia uses Type I sockets (two angled flat pins). Bring an adapter. Voltage is 230V, 50Hz.

SIM and data. Telstra has the best coverage, Optus and Vodafone are cheaper. Prepaid SIMs from AUD 30 for the trip. Or buy an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) before departure.

Language. Australian English is the same English you've studied, just spoken faster and with abbreviations ("arvo" = afternoon, "brekkie" = breakfast, "no worries" = you're welcome). Don't be shy about asking people to repeat themselves.

Tipping. Not expected in Australia. Round up at restaurants if service was great, but otherwise the bill is the bill.

Driving. Left side of the road. Australian drivers are generally courteous. Speed limits are strictly enforced — speed cameras everywhere.

Drinking water. Tap water is safe and clean everywhere in SEQ.

Pharmacies. Chemist Warehouse and Priceline are the big chains. Most basic medication is over-the-counter; bring prescriptions for anything specific.

Emergencies. 000 for police, fire, or ambulance (free from any phone).

School holidays. Queensland school holidays cover ~16 Dec 2026 – 22 Jan 2027 (dates to be confirmed). Expect crowds and higher prices in the first three weeks of January, easing significantly from around 22 January.

Bushfire and weather warnings. Check bom.gov.au (Bureau of Meteorology) and qfes.qld.gov.au before driving into the hinterland in summer.

Open questions to confirm with Ana

  1. Family/kid-friendly tagging — do you want activities flagged as family-friendly? Worth doing if many guests have kids.
  2. Hotel block / group rate — do you want to negotiate a group rate at one Woolloongabba hotel (Oaks, Quest, or Swiss-Belhotel) and give guests a booking code?
  3. Pix key for Brazilian gift contributions — confirmed for the Dicas/gifts tab, will plug into the Gifts section separately.
  4. Specific local picks — what cafés, restaurants and bars in West End, Woolloongabba and South Bank do you and Ana already love and want to feature? Authentic local picks always beat generic ones.
  5. Big Bash League / Gabba fixtures — check once the 2026–27 BBL fixture is published (typically mid-2026). If a home game falls on 8 or 9 January 2027, warn guests early about accommodation pricing in Woolloongabba.
  6. Portuguese version of this guide — should it be a separate document, or rendered as a bilingual site section?
